Web24 feb. 2010 · Yes, HCl attacks brass. Especially zinc is digested leaving porous copper. May be it's not deep attack. However brass after HCl bath changes it's color to metallic copper. Steel is also attacked by HCl. Don't ask me about safe concentrations. Sometimes small amounts of inhibitors are added to secure substrate metal. Web5 dec. 2009 · Be warned that Hydrochloric acid WILL attack brass, in fact it is used to etch brass prior to plating so monitor the stripping carefully. This acid will also remove bits of clothing, skin and concrete floors if due care isn't taken. The safest option, and it probably won't cost much, is to go to a chrome platers and ask them to strip it.
